Marafado

MARAFADO | Album Presentation

On 18 November, at 7:00 pm, the Museu do Fado will host the presentation of Marafado – Todas as Variações de Carlos Paredes, Dois Corridinhos e Uma Canção Para a Eternidade [free translation: All the Variations of Carlos Paredes, Two Corridinhos and a Song for Eternity], the new album by Algarve-born accordionist João Palma.

Taking its name from an Algarve regional expression meaning cheeky or mischievous, Marafado revisits the work of Carlos Paredes with boldness and creativity, bringing the compositions of one of Portugal’s greatest musicians to the accordion.

The album brings together all of Carlos Paredes’ Variations, a composition by his father, Artur Paredes, and two traditional Algarve dance tunes (corridinhos) by João Barra Bexiga, creating a dialogue between different Portuguese musical traditions.

The album culminates in a new interpretation of “Verdes Anos”, featuring Mexican singer Lila Downs and harpist Celso Duarte.

A tribute to the legacy of Carlos Paredes, revealing new sounds and perspectives on his remarkable body of work.
