Zé Maria

(N. 18 April, 1988)

Fado is in Zé Maria's blood. Melodious and well-timbred, simultaneously current and evocative of a tradition. Versatile and loyal to the truth of the words he sings.

José Maria Souto de Moura was born in Lisbon, in 1988, in a family where from an early age he had contact with Fado and the Visual Arts, which came to become in him two expressions of the same artistic sensibility.

He began by singing in some Fado houses in the capital, when he was studying Architecture and Illustration. After a year in São Tomé and Príncipe at an NGO, he returned to Lisbon, resuming his artistic activity as a painter and as a fado singer. In Fado houses he matured and made his Fado known. He also held several individual painting exhibitions, and has a series of published titles as an illustrator.

In 2017, reaffirming his fado vocation, he began to sing regularly in Fado houses and events, performing in places such as Mesa de Frades, Clube de Fado, Senhor Vinho, Parreirinha de Alfama, or Fado ao Carmo, and at Real Fado concerts. He participated in the Caixa Alfama Festival, Santa Casa Alfama and Montepio Fado Cascais. In 2021 he joined the cast of Clube de Fado.

In 2022, he released his debut album – “Zé Maria” – with the quality seal of the Museu do Fado Discos, presented in the Há Fado no Cais cycle, at the Centro Cultural de Belém.
