Pedro Guimarães: We Are Fado, part I

Pedro Guimarães (born 1974) portrays the most outstanding leading figures of the Fado universe, where drawing is but a starting point. The outline and dimensions plurality used allow multiple readings.

The observer relates to the work itself; it’s movement in space makes him unfold both a two dimensional figure and a three dimensional portrait, in a permanent awakening of the senses.

Pedro Guimarães uses a variety of supports, particularly setting the accent on recycled materials. His work’s remains lead to new works. Canvas and wooden boards are the basis for António Zambujo’s portraits, as well as the ones of Carlos Ribeiro, or yet Carlos Paredes. Pallet boards set the drawing of Alfredo Marceneiro.

But he also recycles traditional materials as Portuguese lace or musical instruments, as in his flagship work: Amália Rodrigues portrayed in an impressive 70 Portuguese and Fado classic guitars. An installation which is also a musical instrument.
