Sara Correia

(N. 27 May, 1993)

Proudly raised in Marvila, Sara Correia was born into a fado family and since very early on she has been a regular presence in the best fado houses in the city of Lisbon. And, because of that, she sings with the propriety and strength of someone who grew up in fado.

In September 2018, she edited her debut album, “Sara Correia”. “I have a very strong identification with the themes that make up this record, I see myself in all the stories and they define me as a fado singer. That's why I decided to title it with my own name”, explains the fado singer.

She has lived fado since she was a child. The fact that she grew up in a fado family helped her from an early age to live surrounded by music and musicians and to live that life in a very natural way.

“It was all so fast. I've been going to Fado places since I was a little girl, I have a fado family and I started singing early on”, she recalls.

Even so, there was a moment that was particularly remarkable in this beginning of the journey and that led her to decide that she was going to dedicate herself entirely to fado. “When I participated and won the "Grande Noite do Fado" in Lisbon, I felt that this was what I wanted to do”, she recalls.

Sara Correia was just 13 years old when she won the "Grande Noite do Fado" and, shortly thereafter, she is invited to sing in one of the most mythical fado houses in the city, the Casa de Linhares. There she had the privilege of singing and learning alongside great names in fado, namely Celeste Rodrigues, Jorge Fernando, Maria da Nazaré, among others. All of them “were and will always be the school for a fado singer”, says Sara.

As a matter of fact, for her the experience of the fado house is fundamental. “Treading on fado houses is very important, mandatory, in my opinion. It's where we gain our identity, facing night after night singing as the most serious thing in our life. All the great fado singers of today and ever had the fado house as their root”.

She grew up and learned to listen to Amália Rodrigues, the “whole fado singer” who inspired her so much on the path she has traced until today, in all its aspects, but Sara Correia also has other great voices as references, such as Fernanda Maria, Beatriz da Conceição and Hermínia Silva.

Also in 2018, her talent caught the attention of French director Joel Santoni, who invited her to sing Amália Rodrigues' “Grito” for his series “Une famille formidable”.

She was also invited by Diogo Varela Silva to participate in his film, “Alfama em Si”, portraying Severa, a historical character who is a true symbol of fado, integrating a cast composed of some of the best Portuguese artists.

“Sara Correia”, the first album released under the Universal Music Portugal label, was created in partnership with producer Diogo Clemente. Musicians such as Ângelo Freire – “who is undoubtedly a genius of the Portuguese guitar of this generation” –, master Marino de Freitas on bass, Vicky Marques on percussion and Ruben Alves on piano, took part in it.

In Portugal, the critics celebrated the debut of Sara Correia and unanimously applauded the one they called the “great voice of the new generation”. In 2019, the album earned him two nominations in the first edition of the Play awards, the Portuguese Music Awards, in the categories "Best Fado Album" and "Revelation Artist", the Revelation Award from Rádio Festival, more than 30 concerts and audiences rendered in countries such as Spain, South Korea, Norway, Italy, Austria, Reunion Island and already in 2020 India, Belgium, Holland and Chile.

In September 2020 her second studio album, “Do Coração”, was released, again produced and conceived in partnership with Diogo Clemente. The traditional Fado, where she prints her power like no one else, coexists with other themes, which also become Fado in her voice. An example of this is what will be the album's first single, “Chegou Tão Tarde”, with lyrics and music by the young composer Joana Espadinha. Carolina Deslandes, Luísa Sobral, António Zambujo – with whom she sings a duet on the album – Jorge Cruz and Diogo Clemente are examples of this. The album won the PLAY award for Portuguese Music, in the “Best Fado Album” category.

In 2021, the same album was nominated for the Latin Grammy for best portuguese language roots album.
